But still, opposite opinion, as Artabanus says, is necessary before choice can be exercised.

The rhetoricians theoretically did not care which side of the case their pupils took or which side triumphed. They considered the question only as a problem with a rhetorical response, not as an exposition of a truth. Thus the philosophers saw in the advanced study of rhetoric a practical threat to their domination of higher education and the substitution of a system which was of great superficiality.
