Narratives are plural and competing: this is not only true in intercultural situations, but also in the framework of the same set of cultural presuppositions, when this admits pluralism. Narratives may reproduce and produce ethnocentrism.
CISV presents itself as a system of initiatives aimed mainly at children and adolescents. Its interventions take place in the interaction between adults, on the one hand, and children and adolescents on the other. The analysis concerns the communicative meanings of such interventions, especially the forms of communication that realises them and that they promote. Interventions are seen as communication processes between competent adults and children as recipients, which should ensure the translation of CISV goals into forms of communication that allow their achievement.
Translations are often important for the development of activities. There is a great linguistic gap between children who are either native speakers of English or are very proficient in English as a second language, on the one hand, and children who speak poor or sometimes very poor English on the other hand. The latter have major difficulties in participating in the activities. The limits of communication in a lingua franca are evident above all in the most complex activities, where verbal participation is important and children’s contributions are restricted by their linguistic difficulties.
